The Voices of Children

Children and young people have a lot to say about the challenges they face and the changes they want to see. Their voices remind us why we urgently need a Minister for Children—someone to listen, lead, and act for their rights and wellbeing.

Here, we share powerful quotes from young Australians about the importance of putting children first. Their words speak to the heart of why we must act now to create a better future for every child.

"The creation of a federal Minister for Children would be a transformative step in ensuring youth perspectives are represented in decisions that directly impact their lives. As someone whose journey as a youth advocate and community leader has been profoundly shaped by the support of Queensland's former Minister for Youth, I have witnessed firsthand the value of having dedicated leadership focused on young people. A federal equivalent could amplify this impact, addressing nationwide issues affecting youth and fostering greater inclusion and interconnectedness in policymaking. Young Australians deserve a voice at the highest level, and this role would be pivotal in achieving that."

I was surprised to learn that there is no Cabinet Minister for Children. Supporting children and young people to thrive is a complex challenge, but one filled with opportunity when communities and governments work together. By heeding the calls of Act For Children, we have the chance to build a future where every child is valued and supported. It’s a responsibility we all share and if ignored equivalent to endorsing a social policy of neglect itself

It's important that we platform the voices & lived experiences of First Nations children and young people. Child safety needs to promote all of the wellbeing factors in a child's life, including connection to country, kinship and culture.

If we want to tackle issues like gender-based violence and child abuse, we need cultural change across an entire generation. The first step in healing our society and breaking cycles of trauma is to make sure we're giving children the best possible start in life.

Children cannot thrive when they are criminalised by the state from a young age. Youth justice should mean acting fairly towards children, and ensuring that their families and communities receive the support they need to raise healthy and happy children.

Today's young people will bear the consequences of the decisions made now about the climate, housing, and economic inequality. We need to have a say in these decisions.
